(Reuters) – A suspect was at large after several people were injured in an “active shooter incident” on Friday at a suburban mall in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The shooting took place in front of a Macy’s (NYSE 🙂 department store in Mayfield Mall in Wauwatosa, a suburb of Milwaukee with a population of 47,000, according to local authorities.

Seven adults and one teenager were rushed to hospital, Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber said in a statement, but the extent of their injuries is unknown.

The shooter left the scene when rescue workers arrived, Weber said, and remained at large.

The police described him as a white man in his twenties or thirties.

Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride said in a statement earlier Friday that none of the injuries were life-threatening. He added that there were 75 police officers on site.

Live TV footage from local ABC subsidiary WISN12 showed dozens of police vehicles flashing lights outside Macy’s, and videos posted on Twitter showed paramedics rolling people out of the mall on stretchers.

Several customers polled by local media said shoppers and mall staff were locked inside the mall but safe. One said her sister – a clerk at a mall – heard of 15 gunshots.
