Rugby: The Reds win six times in the Super Rugby AU classification with six wins

(Reuters) – The Queensland Reds got their 100 percent start to the Super Rugby AU season going by beating the Melbourne Rebels 44-19 to claim a bonus points win on Saturday.

Striker Taniela Tupou scored two goals while Hunter Paisami, Fraser McReight, Jock Campbell and Joshua Flook also catered for the crowd as they took six of six wins and reclaimed first place overall from the ACT Brumbies.

Captain James O’Connor kicked four conversions and two penalties in a runaway win.

“It was very important to us to get the simple things right in today’s game,” said O’Connor.

Frank Lomani, Reece Hodge and Michael Wells scored tries for the Rebels but they were always against after losing 24-0 in the first 20 minutes.

Tupou and Paisami scored in the first five minutes, the second attempt being the first of two periods in the game.

Tupou got his second try with an impressive sprint down the line and came close to a hat trick before being replaced in the second half.

The rebels offered hope of a comeback when they brought the score back to 24-14 at halftime, but quickly got better after the break.

Fiji international Lomani’s first start for the rebels proved to be one of their highlights as he scored and set up the other two attempts at line breaks.

The Reds will meet the Brumbies in a table game this coming weekend.
