Congress is working on new stimulus checks worth $ 1,400. Here’s who might be eligible for the first time
Austin Goergen, a student at Oregon State University, launched a petition last year to give loved ones 17 and over the opportunity to qualify for stimulus checks.
Washington lawmakers are one step closer to approving new $ 1,400 stimulus checks for millions of Americans.
This time, a large group could be eligible for the first time: relatives aged 17 and over.
Provided the bill, which the House of Representatives intends to pass and forward to the Senate, is approved in its current form. The legislation is expected to be finalized in mid-March.
Such a change would be great news for the likes of Austin Goergen, 20, a student at Oregon State University who petitioned Change.org last year when he found the initial stimulus checks worth 1,200 US dollars excluding those like himself and his colleagues would be claimed as dependents.

Görgen’s petition received almost 5,000 signatures. Despite the second $ 600 stimulus checks approved by Congress in December, people in this cohort continued to be excluded, despite calls on some sides of the aisle to change those terms.
Previous estimates by the American Enterprise Institute have found that expanding stimulus payments to adult dependents could earn up to 26 million more people.
This would generally affect college students as well as adults with disabilities who may have been claimed by a caretaker.
“It just seemed to be a really big mistake,” said Görgen.
The new bill will likely require adult loved ones to coordinate with those who claimed it and therefore receive the money. Even so, Görgen said it was an improvement on the previous payments.
“I think the current bill on how to approach stimulus checks does a much better job,” he said.

The legislative proposal provides for payments of US $ 1,400 per person if they fall below certain income thresholds.
Individuals with adjusted gross income of up to $ 75,000 are eligible for full payments, as are Heads of Households with incomes of up to $ 112,500 and married couples who jointly submit up to $ 150,000.
Checks would be reduced for incomes above these thresholds and capped at $ 100,000 for single applicants, $ 150,000 for heads of household, and $ 200,000 for joint applicants.
This time, dropout rates are based on enrollment status and the number of children you have, noted Garrett Watson, a senior policy analyst at the Tax Foundation.
“That’s really because they wanted to make sure filers didn’t get paid above a certain income level,” said Watson.
People should be aware of this when determining how much money to expect this time, he said.
As with the second $ 600 stimulus payment, families with mixed status households where only one spouse has a valid Social Security number would also be eligible. Payments go to the eligible spouse and their children, provided they also have valid social security numbers.
The House Ways and Means Committee has called for payments to be based on either 2019 or 2020 tax returns.
Assuming the legislation is passed without delay, experts believe the $ 1,400 in deposits could arrive by the end of March.
