RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) – Two Brazilian police officers were arrested in Rio de Janeiro after surveillance cameras showed them shooting at two young men on a motorcycle before taking them away in a car. The two men later appeared dead.

Saturday’s incident in Rio’s poor suburb of Belford Roxo shed new light on the aggressive tactics used by Brazilian police, which critics claim are often targeted at poor young black men in fatal robberies.

Critics say Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, a far-right former army captain, empowered the police to be more aggressive than ever and offered them his full support in taking down criminals in the country’s drug-ridden slums. Bolsonaro said, “Criminals should die like cockroaches.”

Rio’s military police said in a statement: “As soon as (we) became aware of the facts, all relevant measures were taken immediately.”

The two officers were “arrested and taken to the Rio de Janeiro prison police”. Their weapons have been confiscated and they have been questioned.

In the video, which was first broadcast on the Brazilian news program Fantastico on Sunday, a motorcycle with two men races past the police around a corner. In passing, one of the officers opened fire on the men and they both fell off their bikes.

The police took them off the street and, according to images from another camera, handcuffed them while they were standing against a wall. Then they put her in the back of their car while one of the policemen drives away her motorcycle.

The two men, identified by local media as Edson Arguinez Junior, 20, and Jordan Luiz Natividade, 18, were later found dead, far from where they were arrested.

According to Fantastico, the two cops didn’t mention shooting the motorcycle. They said they released the two men shortly after they took them away in their car, after finding that there were no problems with them or their bike.
